This is the essence of writing fiction. I like it when it happens - but yes, it can have consequences. Some characters are just mischief-makers. I have one (maybe two) in the novel I am now working on (and publishing here on Medium chapter by chapter). I think the prime suspect (who has not yet made an appearance in the first 10 chapters) may need recasting, and hence require a rewrite.
