There are some exceptional contemporary writers — Olga Tokarczuk for one, Murakami (who you quote) for another — so I can't agree that 'modern books are trash'.

I do agree that, compared with Europe, our bookshops tend to exclusively promote new authors and new books, and under-promote the classics.
