Goodbye ILLUMINATION

I have removed the half dozen or so stories that were in ILLUMINATION from the publication.
I just received a link to this page:

and no longer feel it is a publication with which I want to be associated.
Introducing paid membership tiers that include:

seems to me to go against the very spirit that makes Medium the special place it is.
The announcement is sub-headed “Why We Created a Commercial Arm for Our Charity.”
Am I missing something? Surely, ILLUMINATION is no more a charity than any other publication on Medium.
My reach on Medium is extremely low so no one is going to take notice of this farewell, but moving forward I will not submit stories to any publication that announces submission or membership fees.
