AI is only one factor - the other one is the introduction of a global audience into the the freelancing market, which has had the effect of lowering the rates clients are willing to pay - the dollar rate a freelancer is willing to work for is going to be dependent on the cost of living in the part of the world in which they are based - proofreader/copyeditor rates on Upwork have become derisory in the past 18 months - I don't think I shall be using the platform for much longer
